Where we started

WHERE WE STARTED

Our roots go back to 2006 when Nepal witnessed significant social and political changes following the ten-year-long Maoist insurgency. Against this backdrop, the Alliance for Social Dialogue (ASD) was established in 2007 as a virtual advisory board, bringing together diverse voices to debate and discuss ways to build a new, free, open Nepal. As time passed, ASD evolved into a grant-funding organization, empowering determined individuals and groups across Nepal to promote democratic systems and people’s rights.

In 2017, ASD transformed into a national foundation and grant-making arm of Open Society Foundations (OSF) in Nepal, expanding its reach to connect with civil society voices and promote just policy agendas that strengthen Nepal’s democracy and build an inclusive and equitable society.

WHO WE
ARE TODAY

Who we are today

In 2023, we started a new journey as Purak Asia to expand our horizons and catalyze societal transformation through meaningful action. Our extensive experience of working with diverse civic organizations, participating in social movements, and collaborating with stakeholders, has given us a deeper understanding of Nepal’s unique regional requirements and the complex stakeholder universe. Our trajectory of seamless grant allocation and impact monitoring has helped us design robust governance mechanisms to ensure transparency and accountability of our activities and expenditures. Purak Asia will give us an opportunity to distill our learnings and experience to accelerate social change for a better tomorrow for Nepal and beyond.

Our work revolves around building a strong knowledge base, analyzing Nepal’s socioeconomic and political realities objectively, creating enabling networks and partnerships, and establishing convening spaces and platforms to empower citizens as drivers of change.

Parallelly, we have established Purak Asia Consulting, an organization that undertakes services like policy analysis, research, and other commissioned work.
